About the "Ethnic Pulitzers"
Recognizing Journalistic excellence in ethnic media since 1998, the NCM Awards showcase the stories making the news in the new California and the people and media outlets that report them. In 2001, in a segment for PBS's News Hour with Jim Lehrer, Terence Smith called the NCM Awards the "ethnic Pulitzer's."
If NCM and its partners are successful, there will be no need to have a separate event to honor the achievements of this remarkable segment of American journalism. Instead, the ethnic media will be considered an integral part of the new mainstream.
What People Are Saying About the NCM Awards
“The NCM Awards, judged by journalists and academics, are the closest multilingual ethnic press equivalent to the Pulitzer Prizes,” – SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE
“Crusading reporters help U.S. ethnic press thrive in tough times.” – THE WALL STREET JOURNAL
“The NCM EXPO and Awards is an extraordinary gathering of newspapers, television stations and websites that serve the multitude of ethnicities.” - THE SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS
“These are the faces of a changing California, the so-called New California, where minorities are now the majority.” – NEWSHOUR WITH JIM LEHRER
“These proliferating new media outlets reflect not only demographic changes, but a vibrant, unconventional approach to journalism. A recent report ... goes as far as to say that members of the ethnic press are now the new civic communicators.” – WASHINGTON POST
